International Women’s Day: a playlist for Mothers
In honor of International Women’s Day and with Mother’s Day just around the corner, we’re excited to highlight a special collection of music created by participants of Finding Rhythms projects. These heartfelt songs serve as letters of gratitude, appreciation and, at times, apology to their mothers.
We’ve curated a playlist featuring nine beautiful tracks, each penned by prisoners and dedicated to their mothers. Despite the years that separate them and the unique voices behind each song, the themes explored in these tracks resonate with striking similarity. Each song tells a story of love, sacrifice, repentance, resilience, and the unbreakable bond between a mother and her child.
One of the standout tracks in the collection is ‘Mum,’ written by a young offender, Dan*, at HMP ISIS. Our founder, Robin, recalls Dan’s initial withdrawal and reluctance to engage with the project or other participants. However, in one of the last sessions, Dan surprised everyone by stepping up to the mic with a heartfelt chorus and verse. He poured his heart out in a rap, expressing his profound guilt for letting down his mother. Through his music, Dan finally found the courage to convey his apology and unwavering love to his mother, whom he had been avoiding out of shame until that moment. The track features the soulful vocals of Jessica Greenfield, member of High Flying Birds.
